☢ Chapter 11: Swimming Lessons ☢

Kirk put himself in front and started off into the tunnel on their left.

“I can take something,” offered Li. “Since I’m just shining the light. You seem to have your hands full.”

Jules shifted, trying to hold the suit without letting the xyr skin touch any of the webbing or spider fluid that still remained. What would it take to remove it? And if xe couldn’t, would Dome refuse xem entry for bringing in Outside contamination?

“Could you take the pack?” xe asked, wiggling the item at Li. “I don’t want to make you touch anymore of that web.”

“I can take your clothes,” he said, plucking them out of Jules’ grasp. “We’re used to how spitting spiders sting, so it’s probably better that it doesn’t rub onto your skin. Also, if the venom’s reaction is still there, then it might show that you took your suit off.”

Jules dropped the stuff immediately, wide eyes going to a slightly red mark on xyr arm.

“It’s not as bad as it usually looks,” said Li, taking xyr arm and inspecting the section. “Look at a few of mine and you’ll see that they’re much redder and spread over a larger area.”

Jules compared the injuries and let out a small sigh of relief.

“We’ll clean off as we bathe and by tomorrow, yours should be gone.” Li took a step in the same direction Kirk had gone, and motioned for Jules to follow him. It took a few steps before xe stopped paying so much attention to how the cave felt beneath xyr feet, the gritty roughness almost making xem want to put the boots back on. “I just want to say, before my partner ruins the moment, that the amount of courage you’ve shown is impressive.”

Xe laughed. “I did nothing special.”

Li shook his head. “Don’t dismiss yourself so quickly. You took charge when I was laid out on the ground, and I’m glad that you could help Kirk. He’s my partner, and I don’t know what I’d do without him.”

Jules thought about that, and the fact that Li also had a wife.

“Can I ask a question?”

“Certainly.”

“What’s your relationship with Kirk? Because Braum said you also had a wife, and I’m not sure how that works.” Jules bit xyr tongue before xe started rambling.

“That type of relationship works best with communication and consent.” He snorted, and the echoes momentarily distracted Jules. “I sometimes forget that Dome prefers one man and one woman in relationships. Kirk is my boyfriend, and yes, Nixi is my wife. Nixi is also friends with Kirk and sometimes I need to make sure he’s not needling her, or I’ll find him under the dirt in the local graveyard.”

Jules tried to imagine that, one woman with two men. “But when there’s a baby, how can you tell whose child it is?”

“That doesn’t matter to us. The child will be loved by all who help raise them, no matter looks or blood.”

“That can’t happen in Dome,” Jules said, shaking xyr head. “We need to know the lineage of each person so there’s no accidental inbreeding.
